A tech gadget guide that tells you how to buy

Sunday 22 November 2009 @ 2:42 pm

Does it really matter that the LCD TV has a contrast ratio of 40,000:1 or that the digital camera has a 12-megapixel resolution?

David Colker gets to the bottom of these befuddling questions ahead of the holiday shopping season. He offers an in-depth gadget guide that doesn't make suggestions about what to buy but about how to buy.

ASUS U20 12.1″ Laptop!

Sunday 22 November 2009 @ 1:18 pm

asus-u-20

ASUS U20 (or UL20) 12.1″ laptop is one of the most versatile laptops you can get for the money.

Currently the U20 comes with an array of options such as a long battery life of 7.5 hours, 1.3GHz Intel SU7300 Core 2 Duo Processor, and 2GB or 4GB of memory depending on which model you get.

On Amazon, there’s two models ASUS U20A-A1($569.99) and ASUS U20A-B2($969.03).   The basic difference in price range comes down to hard disk space and memory size.

The UL20A-A1 comes with 2GB of memory and 250GB of harddisk space while the UL20A-B2 comes with 4GB of memory and 320GB of harddisk.

For what it’s worth I would rather get the UL20A-A1 and add additional memory plus external hard drive if needed.  It seems like a much better value for your money.

Of course, if you are willing to spare a bit bigger screen, you might want to go with the ASUS UL30 series, which comes with an 8-cell battery with 12-16 hours of battery life.

As a current owner of an ASUS Eee PC, I can tell you these ASUS laptops are well worth it for the money and the long-life of its batteries over others brands out there.

One thing I love about ASUS laptops in general is that the new ones all come with touchpad that lets you scroll/zoom like an iPhone, a feature missed on most other brands.

Iomega ScreenPlay HD Media Player gets Roxio CinemaNow

Saturday 21 November 2009 @ 5:30 am

iomega screenplay1 Iomega ScreenPlay HD Media Player gets Roxio CinemaNowIomega have partnered with Sonic Solutions to introduce a new partnership that enables consumers to buy as well as rent premium entertainment right from the comfort of their living rooms, allowing them to view said entertainment on their own TV sets without having to leave the home. Available in time for the busy holiday season, upcoming U.S. models in Iomega’s award-winning ScreenPlay HD Media Player line will see the incorporation of the Roxio CinemaNow entertainment platform. This platform gives consumers instant access to purchase or rent movies and other premium content as long as they are connected to the Internet, where one can view said content on either standard or high definition TVs. Needless to say, if you’re going to dabble with high definition content, you would do well to make sure you’ve got a speedy Internet line in the first place.

The Roxio CinemaNow entertainment platform is able to dish up a wide range of premium content to what is deemed to be a growing trend- a multi-manufacturer ecosystem of home and mobile electronics that comprises of (but not limited to) PCs, connected TVs, set-top DVRs, Blu-ray Disc players, smart phones and mobile media devices. This platform allows retailers and consumer electronics companies to be part of the lucrative entertainment supply chain, with Roxio CinemaNow-powered stores allowing consumers rent and purchase high-quality entertainment instantly over their device of choice.

All downloaded content will be stored on the ScreenPlay product’s hard drive for future playback, giving you the freedom to purchase a movie in the morning and returning home at night to watch it. Of course, this isn’t a new idea, but it is nice to see more and more companies taking up the challenge and making a name for themselves in this market. Each Iomega ScreenPlay HD Media Player comes with network connectivity, wireless capability via a separate USB Wi-Fi dongle, up to 1TB of onboard storage capacity, high definition video support, USB 2.0 connectivity and support for a wide range of codecs and file types. Expect the new Iomega ScreenPlay HD Media Player range equipped with Roxio CinemaNow to be announced soon.

MIT researchers develop liquid metal battery for the grid and the home

Friday 20 November 2009 @ 9:47 am

56bf106201ery 02.jpg MIT researchers develop liquid metal battery for the grid and the homeWe’ve see plenty of green power research over the years, from solar plants to underwater turbines , but relying on the sun or the sea for electricity is not without its challenges: the sun doesn’t always shine, for instance, and sometimes the water is calm. A group at MIT led by professor Donald Sadoway is developing grid-scale storage solutions for times when electricity isn’t being generated. Since these batteries are intended for the power grid instead of cellphones and Roombas, the researchers can use materials not feasible in consumer electronics — in this case, high temperature liquid metals. Besides being recently awarded a grant from ARPA-E (Advanced Research Projects Agency, Energy) to put these things in green power facilities, MIT has just embarked on a joint venture with the French oil company Total to develop a smaller-scale version of the technology for homes and office buildings.
