UMID M1 US release delayed; no US 3G support as yet

Bad news for anyone considering picking up a UMID M1 mobile internet device in the US, as the company confirms that the previous Summer release has now been replaced with “[UMID] can’t give exact information on the releasing date in US.”  It’s also been confirmed that the currently shipping M1 units – the MID has been launched in Korea already – are incompatible with US-spec 3G, not supporting the 850MHz or 1900MHz bands.

Back at CES 2009 in January, UMID announced they would be releasing the M1 in the US in late May or early June.  It’s unclear whether this new delay is to do with the recent recall over quality issues, or for other reasons; apparently UMID is still working on European-spec HSDPA and WiMAX support, together with distributors there.

As it stands, although a US release of the M1 is still expected, it’s unclear exactly when the MID will land.  Anybody tempted to jump the queue and pick up an import should expect to need to use a separate 3G modem when in the US, too.
