We just recently saw some of the entries in the Greener Gadgets Design Competition that’s happening in New York on February 27th. The designer of one of those entries, the cardboard-housed Recompute, was kind enough to contact us with some more detail about his computer, including a few specs. The fully functional PC houses all off-the-shelf components, including an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, and 2GB of RAM. The designer, Brenden Macaluso, also mentioned that there’s been some concern over the safety of using cardboard — but his reasoning with regards to the materials is that cardboard is more heat-resistant than many plastics, with a much higher fire and ignition point — 258
The Samsung Memoir could easily be mistaken for a real camera. On one side is a full touch-screen, and on the other is an 8-megapixel camera, 16x digital zoom, and Xenon flash . The phone, which we first saw hints of in December , will run on T-Mobile’s 3G network. Besides the 8-megapixel camera, it also has a full-touch virtual QWERTY keypad, a music and video player, built in GPS, and Bluetooth. We know just about all there is to know about the Samsung Memoir at this point, but that doesnt keep us from gettin’ that funny feeling we get whenever a carrier makes a handset official. It’s like an angel getting their wings – except instead of an angel it’s a phone and instead of wings it’s a press release. Still, yay!
There’s still no official word of when it’ll drop or pricing, but the leaked spec sheet (which points at a release in late February) has been pretty spot on so far.
What we know about the Memoir:
- Rumored launch date of February 25th
- Rumored launch price of $299 (with contract)
- 8 megapixel camera with Xenon flash, 16x digital zoom, CMOS autofocus
- 3G
- Widgets for one click uploading to flickr, Kodak Gallery, Photobucket and Snapfish.
- aGPS
- Stereo Bluetooth
- TouchWiz UI

At some point, T-Mobile decided it wanted to play in the megapixel big leagues by rolling out the Motorola ZN5 and Samsung Behold , but why stop at a measly little 5 megapixels? The long-rumored t929 Memoir from Samsung has now been officially announced for T-Mobile USA’s funky 3G bands, featuring a full touchscreen, TouchWiz user interface, integrated AGPS, full HTML browser, and — of course — that glorious 8 megapixel sensor with xenon flash. No word on pricing or availability just yet, but we’re told we can expect it some time this month. Swarming with bugs and flowers, this piece was created by 3D scanning real flowers, insects and music, that were then “digitally sampled, cut, mixed, scaled and rearranged.” Even cooler: It’s a speaker. The speaker, which is made out of stainless steel , is fully functional and was designed by Tord Boontje as part of the ” Digital Explorers : Discovery” exhibition at Metropoliton Works center in London. Pretty cool, huh. [ Art Daily via Design Boom ]

With about three weeks left to go, the Progressive Automotive X-Prize has already got 25 submissions (20 names have been publicly released) with creators ranging from college students to large auto makers already in the game. Here’s the deal with the contest: the cars must be production-capable and fall in with federal safety guidelines, and it’s got to be possible to produce and sell 10,000 of them annually, with a working business plan in place for this to happen by 2014. The car must deliver at least 100 MPGs, and CO2 emissions can’t exceed 200 grams per kilometer. The prize for the competition is ten million dollars.

“What if we could manipulate the earth’s own magnetic field and thus program data into the natural energy curtains of the planet?” What if “the earth itself is already encoded with someone else’s data, and that, down there in crustal formations of rock, crystalline archives shimmer”? I like alien conspiracy, and the idea of seeding the earth for data storage instead of food harvest is interesting. The earth’s drive heads would have to be supersonic jets and the latency would be hell, but don’t let reality stop you from enjoying this well written fantasy post by Geoff at [ BLDGBLOG ]

I’m glad to see Joe Belfiore from Zune (and previously, Windows Media Center) jump over to Windows Mobile . Windows Mobile needs more people who understand gadget slickness, and Zune and Windows Media Center are some of Redmond’s best work. Windows Mobile, on the other hand, is of great important, but still lacks that touch of magic that’ll make it a sweet piece phone OS for those of us not corporate email junkies. Windows Home Server GM Charlie Kindel is also headed to the group. [ TechFlash ]

Jimmy Eat World has just launched an innovative new site for its American tour that uses a clever implementation of Twitter to give fans an easy way to chat about each upcoming concert. To use the system, simply send a tweet to @jimmyeatworld, followed by the date of the upcoming concert you’ll be attending. Here are the complete instructions:
Tweet @jimmyeatworld #YYYYMMDD (where YYYYMMDD is the date of the show). For example, @jimmyeatworld #20090223 can’t wait to see you in New York!
Forums related to individual shows are nothing new – many artists homepages and fan sites feature boards dedicated to helping fans connect and talk about upcoming and recent concerts. But these generally require users to sign up for accounts, and they don’t really work well for ongoing conversations during the show itself. The new Twitter system is much more accessible (assuming you have a Twitter account), and also lends itself to real-time chats.
Tweets pertaining to each show are separated and presented on their own pages, making it easy to see who will be going and what people have been saying about the concert. Because the site is so new only a few dozen tweets have been saved, but the stream could be used in any number of ways, from offering parking tips to chatting during the show itself. It’s a cool system, but it could probably use some work – for one, each hash tag weighs in at nearly 25 characters, which would be frustrating to enter multiple times (I’d prefer it if every show used an easy abbreviation like #sf).
And while this is by no means the first system to use Twitter to let users submit content (Techmeme just launched one last week), it’s definitely another sign that the service is going increasingly mainstream.
