Smart-Leaf by Originatic

Sunday 11 January 2009 @ 10:46 pm

Today, at CES, I finally got a chance to go over to the exposition at the Sands. For those who don’t know CES, the Sands/Venetian is the where some of the more experimental technologies is at (as opposed to the Las Vegas Convention Center).

SimCraft Took me for a ride at CES

Sunday 11 January 2009 @ 10:03 pm

We already discussed the Emperor super-power chair from NovelQuest , but in the booth next to it at CES was SimCraft’s racing simulator. That’s real Indy 500 race car driver Sarah Fisher in the photo, by the way. I got a chance to try it, and I tell you, it felt like I was really auto racing. The frame was made of the same materials found in actual race cars, and it moved when I turned the wheel.

Sunday 11 January 2009 @ 7:00 pm

The folks behind these Psyko 5.1 surround sound “gaming” headphones went an unorthodox route when deciding how best to deliver sound to your ears—through your skull.

The Nyko Wand May Be Just as Good as the Wiimote, Or Even Better [Wii]

Sunday 11 January 2009 @ 6:00 pm

So far, no one has had the cojones to clone the Wiimote. Then Nyko stepped up to the plate and announced the Wand. Playing with it at CES, I was impressed.

GotWind CES Tent Uses Solar and Wind Power to Recharge Gadgets, Not Tired Bloggers [Ces 2009]

Sunday 11 January 2009 @ 5:00 pm

GotWind is no stranger to charging gadgets using wind and solar power , and at CES this year there were on hand to recharge people’s mobiles with a handy locker/charging station for geeky journalists. Their tent, sponsored by LG, had connectors for a variety of handsets (good on LG for that), and I’ve read scattered reports today that said you’d get about a 30% charge in 30 minutes. Now, if they could only find a way to recharge our exhausted CES 2009 staff, who are no doubt spent after their extensive conference coverage and a few innocent pranks. Those CES massages were a start, but only a start.

The Home Security Television Simulator

Sunday 11 January 2009 @ 1:30 pm

Here’s another option for those of you on the lookout for cheap home security while you’re away on vacation.  It’s of course never going to be as good as a security system that’s installed into your home, however, it’ll at least help.  This little box when flipped on simulates the flickering glow of a television.  Which in most situations would be enough that burglars would move onto the next home.  Since the path of least resistance is ideal, they’re not going to want to go into a home where someone is already home. Yes, you could set a timer up to make your own TV flip on and off.  However, this little lighted box uses 2% of the power used by your average television.  There is also the option of getting a timer for your lights and it’d cost  you about the same.  It just all depends on your personal preference and luckily the seller distributes both.  So you can compare and choose the best choice for your home.  You can pick this up for $39.95 on Hammacher and Schlemmer . Koss CC_01 Earbuds adjust to fit your ears

Sunday 11 January 2009 @ 12:35 pm

There is never a shortage of people annoyed by earbuds.  Typically the issue is that they fall out of your ears, personally I’m still am looking for a pair of earbuds that I’m entirely really happy with.  Well Koss has developed a new type of earbud that conforms to your ears far better than the competition.  So far earbuds just have different sizes of squishy covers to go over the earbuds.  However, Koss makes their earbuds completely customizable so they’re sure to fit your ears.

Touch Revolution are introducing the NIMble device to the US market via telecomms partners so you’ll see it later this year under various brands and probably with slight customisations. What they’re showing here is a prototype showing what it’s capable of.

CES video: Green gadgets, kids tech and other trends

Sunday 11 January 2009 @ 11:38 am

Embedded video from CNN Video

LAS VEGAS — Consumer electronics are becoming more kid-centric, blurring the line between toys and technology. The trend is reaching toward younger and younger children, with some manufacturers aiming at kids as little as 3 years old.

Toys are also increasingly going online to reach kids where they’re spending more of their time. Mattel’s Barbie B-Nails, for example, lets girls create a nail design on a computer, upload and share the design, then download it to a gadget that can paint it on their nails. The El Segundo company calls these toys "beautronics: where beauty meets electronics."

For more examples, including digital cameras for tots, click on the video above to see a presentation I did with CNN.
