Windows Vista has made the task of directly editing the BCDedit file complicated as it is no longer text based as the boot.ini file was, and VistaBootPRO is here to help. Users can make changes to the Windows Vista Boot Configuration Data (BCD) registry quickly and easily, doing the job in a fraction of the time it would take using the alternative DOS based command lines. There is no longer the need to become familiar with the ins and outs of the bcdedit.exe switches and options. VistaBootPRO will guide you through the process to reach your desired results:
- Install a second OS or manage your boot configuration
- Never have to directly edit the BCDEdit file
- Back up all your boot information (BCD store) before editing
- Change the order of the boot menu that appears when your PC starts
- Set any operating system to be the default
- Rename any of your operating system list entries
- Improved built-in diagnostics help find and correct errors in the BCD store
- Fully compatible with all available versions of Windows Vista and XP
- Works with all existing releases of next-generation ‘Windows 7′

Here’s another tool for hacking multiboot menus, and even more about the way that Vista starts up. It’s more powerful than EasyBCD, with plenty more options. A particularly nice feature is that it lets you back up all your boot information — called the BCD store — before you begin making any changes. That way, it’s easy to restore your system should things go awry.
With this program, you’ll be able to change the order of the boot menu that appears when your PC starts; set any operating system to be the default; rename any of your operating system list entries; and change the amount of time the menu displays before you boot into your default operating system. There’s more as well, including quite a few esoteric options, such as debugging the boot process, enabling or disabling the boot GUI mode, allowing or disallowing the use of unsigned drivers in the 64-bit version of Windows Vista, and similar options.

Editor’s Review of EasyBCD
Old-time Windows XP users may remember that if they wanted to change the way that XP booted in multiboot systems, they just needed to dig a little, and edit a boot.ini file. With Windows Vista, though, that’s no longer possible. Now an well-nigh incomprehensible command line program called BCDEDIT is in control, and woe is the person who tries to wrestle with it. There’s no way you’ll win; you might as well cry “uncle” now.
However, all is not lost. This freebie is essence serves as a front-end to BCDEDIT, and lets you change how your multiboot PC works. You’ll be able to easily change all of your important settings. The program even includes a diagnostics and troubleshooting tool that will help recover from a multi-boot system gone bad.
By the way, you should be familiar with multiboot menus before using this program, so that you don’t do your system any damage.
It’s a new year, and it’s time to make resolutions that we won’t stick to. But in the spirit of the season, we conducted an informal poll around the office to find out what the geeks’ resolutions are.

If you are an early adopter like myself, you have probably left a trail of iPods in your wake. This little DIY project is a great way to repurpose those obsolete players as desktop speakers. All-in-all, the conversion cost around $100, with most of the cost tied up in shipping. In the end, a little soldering, gluing and dremmeling resulted in some sweet looking speakers that would naturally go well with any Mac setup. Hit the link for complete instructions.

My guess is this has nothing to do with the phishing attacks that started on Twitter a couple of days ago. But a few minutes ago the official Fox News Twitter account posted “Breaking: Bill O Riley is gay,” right after a legitimate message about making turkey lettuce wraps.
My guess is they’re just finding out about it now, and realizing their password, which was probably “password,” has been changed. Twitter will promptly restore the account to its rightful owners, I’m sure. But here’s my question – if you’ve had your Twitter account hacked, how long did it take you to get it back?

We applauded, in a non-literaly sense, the RIAA’s decision to stop with its willy nilly John Doe lawsuits. We applaud today, also in a non-literal sense, the RIAA’s decision to drop MediaSentry, the busybody firm that caught music pirates “red handed.”
The drop actually happened several months ago, which shows how secretive and sinister the RIAA truly is. ::cough::
With MediaSentry, which was a business built around—and here’s the genius part—downloading songs from your share folder, then using that transaction as evidence of your malfeasance, now out of the picture, the RIAA has turned to DtecNet Software, which is based in Denmark.
Curiously, the RIAA hasn’t said why it dropped MediaDefender. Let’s speculate recklessly, then!

Roku’s Netflix box is currently a one-trick pony, but it’s getting Amazon’s Video on Demand later this year, meaning you can soon buy or rent and instantly stream movies and TV shows from Amazon’s service. Amazon’s Video on Demand library has about 40,000 titles and releases movies on the same day they hit DVD, and anything you buy on the Roku box can be accessed on your PC or Mac too. Like Netflix, the streams will scale to your bandwidth. I think this officially makes the $99 Roku box the best value in standalone VOD boxes, since it explodes the Roku’s catalog weakness by giving it access to new titles.
