Oppo’s Muse G11 gets real

Friday 26 September 2008 @ 10:52 pm

Filed under: Gaming , Handhelds , Portable Audio , Portable Video In our perpetual search for the perfect “miniature PMP that just so happens to play SNES games with a reasonable control scheme,” the Oppo Muse G11 is certainly a forerunner. We swooned when we saw those swivel-display technical drawings , and now Oppo has the first prototype of the device out and about. We’re still a little short on tech specs, but as long as that mystery processor is prepared to draw Chrono Trigger with pixel-perfect precision, we couldn’t care less

Microsoft’s Xbox Live, Zune services to be down simultaneously this Monday

Friday 26 September 2008 @ 10:13 pm

Filed under: Portable Audio , Portable Video Simmer down folks — everything is going to be a-okay. Yes, ’tis true — Microsoft has indeed scheduled for Xbox Live service maintenance and Zune service tweakage to take place at the exact same time this coming Monday, but it’s probably not worth losing your mind over. In fact, Major Nelson goes out of his way to affirm that “when [Xbox Live] service returns, you will not have any new features and you will not have the new Xbox experience update.” Point being, your Zune Social, Zune.net forums, all of the Zune Marketplace and Xbox Live services will be offline for up to 24 hours (48 hours for the Zune suite) starting at 12:01 PST on September 29th, but don’t expect a Zunephone to pop out of your now-forgotten HD DVD add-on when things come back on.

Imation’s wireless USB Apollo Pro WX external HDD does backups sans wires

Friday 26 September 2008 @ 9:21 pm

Filed under: Wireless , Storage We knew wireless USB would eventually rise up and become more than a pitiful excuse for not plugging in your digicam to transfer photos, and lo and behold, it has done just that. Imation’s latest Apollo drive packs a lot of promise, thanks in huge part to the integrated WiQuest WUSB solution tucked within. Put simply, the Apollo Pro WX can begin to backup user data as soon as the machine in question comes “into range.” Without any wires (save for that pesky AC adapter), this one no-touch backup system can ensure that your most precious 1s and 0s aren’t lost for eternity when unforeseen disaster strikes.

Mitsubishi Plans Ferocious MMR25 Rally Racer for Year 2025 [The Future Is Awesome]

Friday 26 September 2008 @ 8:30 pm

In the year 2025, a scant 17 years from now, all cars will be electric. But according to Mitsubishi’s entry into the LA Auto Show’s latest design challenge, some will even tear up the Salt Flats, looking like bionic insects with the cruelest of intentions. Each wheel of the proposed MMR25 Rally Racer gets eight little wheels for omnidirectional movement, and there’s no such thing as windshields in the future, replaced—naturally—by Star Trek tech.

SimpleTech Duo Pro: 4 Interfaces, 3 Terabytes, 2 Drives, 1 Happy Nerd [Storage]

Friday 26 September 2008 @ 8:00 pm

There are plenty of dual-hard-drive outboard storage systems on the market, but SimpleTech’s Duo Pro struck me as particularly brimming with awesomeness. It’s not a NAS—it’s totally local—but you have a choice of USB 2.0, FireWire 400 and 800, and eSATA, which clocks a max transfer speed of 3GB per second. (That’s gigabytes, not gigabits.) You can naturally do RAID 0 or 1, and though the current options are a 1TB total for $280, a 1.5TB total for $420 and a 2TB version for $550, you will be able to choose a 3TB config when the winter winds start to blow

Forget Vista: 10 OSes That Could Change Your World

Friday 26 September 2008 @ 7:59 pm

One interesting thing about the software world, I find, is that there is a trickle- up system for innovation. Things like live searches, better task bars, and the much-debated widget/gadget/dashboard idea often have had their seeds in smaller OSes or pieces of software
