Graphene Could Become World’s Best Super Battery [Graphene]

Wednesday 17 September 2008 @ 11:30 pm

You know graphene, the super material that’s strong enough to withstand diamond cutters ? Turns out that not only may it replace silicon as the de rigeur component of microchips, it’s on track to becoming the next megabattery as well. Engineers at the University of Texas in Austin have found a way to store electrical charge in graphene-based ultracapacitor devices, and their discovery could revolutionize the renewable energy industry

Android-powered HTC Dream to sell for $199 on T-Mobile

Wednesday 17 September 2008 @ 11:04 pm

Filed under: Cellphones With under a week to go before the HTC Dream is officially unveiled in the Big Apple, the Wall Street Journal has given us something juicy to gnaw on for the time being: a price. Unsurprisingly positioned to compete directly with the iPhone 3G , the Android-powered HTC Dream / G1 will go for a cool $199 (with 2-year contract, obviously) when it launches on T-Mobile, though there’s no word yet on what it’ll run sans subsidization

Wednesday 17 September 2008 @ 10:37 pm

Filed under: Laptops The long wait is up, and Peru is first in line to receive the new Windows flavored XO through the OLPC program. Though not as cute as the bubbly Sugar interface, it will pack more of a real world punch where apps are concerned — each XO is fitted out with an assortment of MS goodies, including Office 2003 and Learning Essentials 1.0 for Office, served on a bed of XP Pro . Now before you get all teary eyed, keep in mind that Sugar lives on , and there’s an emulator out there with your name on it

Wooden Squirrel Cage Machine Obsesses Over Your Thoughts For You [Avant Garde Engineering]

Wednesday 17 September 2008 @ 10:15 pm

Columbia professor Douglas Irving Repetto designed this crazy looking project which allows humans to write obsessive thoughts on scraps of paper, deposit them in one of seven squirrel cages, and spin them round and round to let the machine obsess for them. Made with grape arbor, glue, rubber bands and a laser cutter, the apparatus utilizes “parallel processing to the age-old problem of broken human minds.” Yeah, I’m not sure I quite get it either, but it sure is pretty. Check out Repetto’s site to see a video of his Distributed Squirrel Cage for Parallel Processing in action! [ Douglas Repetto via MAKE ]
